We’re excited to share with you your August read, Headshot by Rita Bullwinkel – freshly longlisted for the Booker Prize at the time of writing!

Whilst our aim is to bring you the indie published books that the mainstream hasn’t discovered yet, it’s always secretly satisfying when one of our picks gets recognised by one of the big prizes.

So, Headshot: 8 young women from across the US have made the journey to Reno to compete in the Daughters of America tournament. We get to know them as they fight one-on-one in a series of face-offs. Where did they come from, and where are they going? Each girl has her own story as to how she found boxing, and each will find their own paths after this moment, which, big as it feels at the time, perhaps isn’t.

Reading Headshot, you’re in the boxing ring. It’s not a book about sport. As readers, we are not observers – we’re right there inside the girls’ minds and bodies as they compete for the title.

Ostensibly, Headshot is a sports novel. But it’s the girls’ stories I got lost in, and the feeling of being invited into an unknown world. Expect grit, great depth, and a tension that surpasses the feeling of a ringside seat.
